Osteochondrosis in the Horse

چکیده
The term “osteochondritis dissecans” was originally proposed in 1887 by physician Franz König to describe joint lesions that resulted in formation of osteochondral fragments in the absence of significant trauma. The term was somewhat of a misnomer, since a primary inflammatory etiology has since been ruled out. This led to the suggestion of the term “osteochondrosis” (and by extension, osteochondrosis dissecans) by Howald in 1942, but the original name has stuck, as has the more common acronym “OCD.” In veterinary medicine, osteochondrosis (OC) is used for any focal abnormality of endochondral ossificiation affecting the articular-epiphyseal cartilage complex (AECC); if a fragment is present, then osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) is appropriate. More variable terminology is used in the human clinical literature, where lesions of similar pathophysiology, but at different anatomical locations, are named by the person who first described them (e.g. Theimann’s disease in the fingers/toes, Panner’s disease in the elbow).

Identification of a new quantitative trait locus on equine chromosome 18 responsible for osteochondrosis in Hanoverian warmblood horses.
In this study we present a newly detected QTL associated with osteochondrosis in Hanoverian warmblood horses on equine chromosome 18 (ECA18). We developed a highly polymorphic and evenly distributed marker set on ECA18 employing the horse genome assembly EquCab2. The marker set included 11 newly developed microsatellites. Average polymorphism information content was 62.1% at an average spacing ...
متن کاملHistology of two rice bodies isolated from the stifle of an adult draught horse stallion
In the human and equine species, different kinds of free floating intra-articular particles are related to certain disorders. Osteochondral fragments formed during osteochondrosis dissecans are the most common finding in the equine species, whereas in humans rice bodies due to rheumatoid arthritis are more frequent. Herein we report a third type of floating body inside the stifle of an adult dr...
متن کاملRadiographic closure time of appendicular growth plates in the Icelandic horse
BACKGROUND The Icelandic horse is a pristine breed of horse which has a pure gene pool established more than a thousand years ago, and is approximately the same size as living and extinct wild breeds of horses. This study was performed to compare the length of the skeletal growth period of the "primitive" Icelandic horse relative to that reported for large horse breeds developed over the recent...
متن کاملSubchondral cystic lesions of the proximal extremity of the tibia in horses: 12 cases (1983-2000).
OBJECTIVE To determine clinical and radiographic features of subchondral cystic lesions (SCL) of the proximal extremity of the tibia in horses that could be used to classify these lesions as being related to osteochondrosis or osteoarthritis and to evaluate results of surgical debridement. DESIGN Retrospective study. ANIMALS 12 horses with 14 SCL. PROCEDURE Medical records and radiographs...
متن کاملThe Application of Genomic Technologies to the Horse
The publication of a draft equine genome sequence and the release by Illumina of a 50,000 marker single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping chip has provided equine researchers with the opportunity to use new approaches to study the relationships between genotype and phenotype. In particular, it is hoped that the use of high-density markers applied to population samples will enable progres...
